How to Set Goals for the SAT/ACT

Here is a great article that talks about what kinds of scores might be considered "good" on the college entrance exams. We will read it in class next week and write a short reaction piece.

What is going to happen in AVID class this year?
I made a list of your best/worst things about AVID as well as your goals for the year. I think this is a good starting place for a discussion of how we will run the class this year and how we can make it better-- to get through it smoothly and make it memorable-- just like you wanted!

SAT/ACT Practice

While you are on the computers or over the weekend, make sure you click into the practice page for the test you are planning to take and do at least:
ONE English practice section (about 20 minutes) AND
ONE Math practice section (about 15-20 minutes)

Report your scores to Mrs. Eddy for credit--thanks!
Insight resume questions: Complete final copies of four of the six by Friday, September 12th

Speech! Speech!

This week we started to think about and write our end of the year speeches.
Friday we will be in the computer lab with two tasks:
1- SIGN UP FOR HABITAT FOR HUMANITY MAY 10TH OR YOUR SPOT IS GOING TO BE GIVEN AWAY!
2- Write your speech: humorous, serious, ironic, light-heated or sincere-- this speech is all about you and your AVID experience/
Possible topics:

SIGN UP FOR HABITAT! Have a Great Break!

Thanks for all the fun times this short, short week. We will get serious about the last tasks we have for this class: Community Service MAY 10th SIGN UP FOR HABITAT data collection, speech writing, fund raising, banquet, slide show and presentation, etc. SIGN UP FOR HABITAT for May 10th http://www.salemhabitat.org/volunteer.html

Register for May 10th from this site: Habitat Site


1) HIt the big, square "register" button to Register.
2)      Fill out the form completely. For “Group/Team” select NONE, as they haven’t added us to this screen yet.  “Referral source”=Mrs. Evans/WSHS
3)      Click Register. It will take you to the top of the same page and, highlighted in BLUE, it will say “Click here” to continue.
4)      At the TOP of this page will be the MONTHS of the year. Click on the appropriate month (April or May) for your club. Scroll down to the correct date (see top of this page) and it will give you a West Salem link. Click that, then select the BOX that is at the top for the shift (8am-12pm) and Update your registration.
5)      Print your confirmation page as verification for your Club Advisor to keep.

6)      See the site, your Club Advisor (Mrs. Eddy) or Mrs. Evans (B225) to get a copy of the waiver you must sign. Make sure your parents know you are participating. Their signature is required if you are still under 18 on the day of the activity.

Community and Service!

Volunteering for Habitat for Humanity’s Building program

April 26th: Latino Club and National Honor Society
May 10th: Latino Club and AVID
Please let everyone know that we need them to go onto volunteer up : http://www.salemhabitat.org/volunteer.html Habitat and create a user name and password. They must also be 16 years old or older, and must sign a waiver form before they can volunteer. Each date is limited to 20 volunteers. More dates will be available in the summer (Wednesdays) and next year (Saturdays).
1)      Select the volunteer tab. Click the VOLUNTEER button in the middle of the screen (scroll down first).

2)      Register.
