APPLY FOR A TRUE, COMPETITIVE, SCHOLARSHIP OR AT LEAST SPEND THE PERIOD RESEARCHING A SCHOLARSHIP THAT YOU WILL APPLY FOR SOME TIME THAT REQUIRES MORE THAN A SIMPLE CONTEST OR LOTTERY.

CONSIDER ONE OF THESE:

1- Coca Cola Scholars This one is for good GPA (3.0 plus) with some kind of leadership stuff in their lives—teaching little kids at church or in school, reading to younger children, peer mentoring, coaching, leading clubs or groups, leading discussion groups, science project, organizing research protocol for a group, community service groups, caring for younger siblings, ANYTHING!

2- This one, the Dell, is for EVERYONE who will be eligible for a Pell Grant (financial need explained in the info provided), but especially those who have had to overcome special life circumstances to get as far as they have and this one emphasizes a GPA as such:

Grit by overcoming personal challenges in their lives related to their families, schools or communities

Potential by participating in college readiness programs and seeking out academic rigor.

Ambition by dreaming of obtaining a college degree.

The Dell scholarship app doesn’t open until November 1^st, but they need to read about it and do the practice questions and gather the things they will need to apply, which they could work on today, absolutely, even as they find a scholarship that is open to apply for this week from the counseling pages on the West website or their other resources:

Announcements:

1-  College Fair, October 24^th Field Trip. sign up here: http://www.nacacnet.org/college-fairs/fallncf/pages/portland.aspx

You will need to get a barcode—and use it at the fair to ask for information from various schools, etc. How many of you are going on this field trip?

2-  Ellen Garden--- Saturday, October 15^th: Community Service for AVID.

Friday, October 7th:

1.   Get online and apply to Western Oregon University.

You will check that you have an APPLICATION FEE DEFERMENT as you fill out the form-- but you MUST complete your part of the form ( the first three boxes) and turn it in to Mrs. Ingerson or Mrs. Eddy in order to have your application evaluated. You MUST hand this in by Wednesday, October 12th.

If your GPA is less than 3.0 and/or you will not complete Algebra II by the end of this year, you will have to write a letter explaining the hardship/life-situation, etc. that kept you from taking care of these requirements, along with the letter of recommendation from a teacher or counselor that EVERYONE will need to have with them by November 1^st, when the admissions counselors will be here to review your file with you and let you know if you are accepted.

Highlights!
Insight Resume and AVID Contract
Friday: Work on Requests for Letters of recommendation and complete at least ONE scholarship application.
Monday: Class study day-- bring something from another class or this one to DO-- be busy the whole time to show your AVIDUS and scholarly ways! plus substitute will check that you have Cornell OR other FOCUSED NOTES: (if there is a note format your teacher requests or requires, those are acceptable for AVID)
